An address range may be available, correctly registered, and ready to route, yet still carry old abuse reports, inaccurate geolocation, or a poor reputation on the platforms you need to access.

A single blacklist check is not enough. To understand whether an IP range is suitable, you need to look at its reputation history, abuse reports, geolocation, routing status, and performance in your own environment.

Quick answer

To check IP reputation, review major reputation databases, blocklists, and recent abuse reports. Before leasing the IP, also confirm its geolocation, routing status, and real-world performance.

For a complete pre-lease check, look at:

• Current blacklist listings
• Previous abuse reports
• Spam or malware history
• Geolocation accuracy
• WHOIS and registry information
• Routing and RPKI status
• Real-world performance on the platforms you plan to use

The most reliable way to check an IP is to combine database research with real-world testing.

Table of Contents

What is IP reputation?

How to check IP reputation

Why testing matters

Can IP reputation change, and what happens if it does?

How PubConcierge checks IP reputation

Frequently asked questions

What is IP reputation?

IP reputation reflects how trustworthy an IP address appears based on its current and past activity. Reputation systems may consider links to spam, malware, fraud, brute-force attacks, botnets, open proxies, suspicious automation, or repeated abuse reports.

Because platforms use different databases and risk models, an IP may appear clean in one tool but still be restricted elsewhere. Its reputation can also improve or decline over time depending on how it is used.

How to check IP reputation

1. Check major blocklists

Start by checking whether the IP address appears on relevant public and commercial blocklists.

Tools such as the Spamhaus IP and Domain Reputation Checker and AbuseIPDB can help identify current listings and previous abuse reports.

Do not look only at whether the IP is listed. Check:

• Why it was reported
• How recently the report appeared
• Whether the issue has been resolved
• Whether it affects your intended use

An old email-related listing, for example, may be critical for mail infrastructure but less important for another type of service.

2. Look at the IP’s history

A clean result today does not always tell the full story.

An IP range may have a pattern of repeated abuse reports, frequent routing changes, or previous use in high-risk activity. Even if it is not currently listed, that history may still affect how some platforms classify it.

Ask the leasing provider how the range was used before and whether any serious reputation issues were identified during screening.

PubConcierge explains this process further in its guide on how to evaluate IP address quality before leasing.

3. Confirm the geolocation

An IP may be registered in one country but appear somewhere else in commercial geolocation databases.

This often happens after an address range changes users, routing locations, or network operators. Different platforms may also show different locations because they rely on different data providers.

For location-sensitive projects, check the IP against the actual services you plan to use.

Incorrect records can often be corrected. For example, MaxMind accepts GeoIP correction requests, although changes may take time to appear across all platforms.

4. Check routing and RPKI

Reputation is only one part of IP quality.

A range may look clean but still cause deployment problems if the routing authorization is incomplete or incorrect.

Depending on the setup, you may need:

• A Letter of Authorization
• BGP coordination
• A Route Origin Authorization
• Correct RPKI records
• Accurate registry information

ARIN provides a useful explanation of Route Origin Authorizations and how they confirm which ASN is allowed to announce an IP prefix.

Before leasing, confirm who can announce the range and whether the required LOA and ROA will be provided.

5. Check reverse DNS requirements

Reverse DNS, or PTR records, maps an IP address back to a domain name.

Missing reverse DNS does not mean that an IP has a bad reputation, but it can affect services that use reverse lookups for technical validation or trust checks.

The RIPE NCC reverse DNS documentation explains how reverse DNS is configured.

Ask who controls the reverse DNS zone and whether PTR records can be added or changed during the lease.

Why testing matters

Reputation tools can point to obvious risks, but they cannot show exactly how an IP will perform in your environment. They do not know how your application sends requests, which accounts or sessions are involved, how much traffic you expect, or which locations and platforms matter to your project.

That is why testing before a larger commitment is so valuable. A real test can show whether the correct country is detected, whether routes stay stable, whether latency is acceptable, and whether connections or sessions behave as expected. It can also reveal whether a problem affects the whole range or only a few addresses.

Testing may also show that the IP is not the real issue. A CAPTCHA, 403 or 429 response, or failed login can be caused by request volume, cookies, account reputation, missing headers, session changes, or platform-specific rules.

PubConcierge allows customers to test suitable IPv4 resources before scaling, so they can review reputation, geolocation, routing, and real-world performance in their own environment.

Can IP reputation change, and what happens if it does?

Yes. An IP that performs well at the start of a lease can develop reputation problems later because of high request volumes, abuse complaints, compromised systems, poor traffic configuration, end-user activity, new platform rules, or incorrect third-party classifications.

An IP reputation check is a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee. No provider can promise that an address will remain accepted by every website forever, but it should screen the IPs before delivery and help investigate problems if they appear.

When an issue arises, document the affected IPs, timestamps, error codes, expected location, destination platform, and any tests already completed. The provider should then review blacklist listings, abuse reports, routing, RPKI, registry data, geolocation, and reverse DNS.

Some issues can be fixed through a routing update, geolocation correction, PTR change, or delisting request. If the problem clearly comes from the supplied IP block and cannot be resolved, replacement should be discussed based on the lease terms and available inventory.

How PubConcierge checks IP reputation

Before deployment, PubConcierge checks suitable resources for reputation, geolocation, routing, RPKI, reverse DNS, and fit with the customer’s intended use.

Customers can also test the IPs before scaling. If a problem appears, the team investigates whether it comes from the IP block, routing, configuration, or the destination platform. When the supplied IPs are confirmed to be the issue and cannot be fixed, replacement options can be discussed based on the agreement and available resources.

Not sure whether an IPv4 block will work for your project? Request IPv4 resources for testing before making a larger commitment.

Test for Free

Frequently asked questions

How can I check whether an IP address has a bad reputation?

Check reputation databases, blocklists, and abuse-reporting platforms for signs of previous problems. Before leasing, also verify the IP’s geolocation, registry details, routing status, and performance in your own environment.

Does a clean blacklist report mean the IP has a good reputation?

Not always. A clean report means the address is not currently listed in that particular database. Other platforms may use different data, account signals, traffic behavior, or private risk scores.

Can a blacklisted IP address be cleaned?

Sometimes. The cause of the listing must first be removed. A delisting request can then be submitted to the relevant database. The process and timeline vary between providers.

How often should IP reputation be checked?

Check reputation before deployment and continue monitoring it during the lease, especially if the IPs support high-volume or business-critical operations.

Does PubConcierge replace IPs with poor reputation?

PubConcierge investigates reported issues first. If a serious problem is confirmed to come from the supplied IP resource and cannot be corrected, replacement options may be discussed according to the agreement, intended use, and availability.

Disclaimer: Testing results, remediation options, and replacement eligibility depend on the applicable agreement, technical circumstances, intended use, and resource availability.
